The Subclass 490 visa is a temporary visa for skilled workers from outside of Australia. It is a provisional visa that allows skilled workers to stay and work in Australia for up to four years. The visa is designed to help fill gaps in areas of skills shortages in regional Australia and is part of the Australian Government’s Skilling Australians Fund. 

The Subclass 490 visa is open to skilled workers from outside of Australia who meet the eligibility criteria. Applicants must have: 

• an approved sponsoring employer 

• a nomination from their sponsoring employer 

• a valid passport 

• sufficient funds to support themselves and any dependents 

• a minimum of two years of relevant work experience 

• a valid Skills Assessment from an approved assessing authority 

• a valid English language proficiency test score 

• evidence of health insurance 

The Subclass 490 visa can be applied for online and applicants will need to provide documentation as evidence of their eligibility. The visa application process can take up to three months and is subject to approval by the Department of Home Affairs. 

Once approved, the Subclass 490 visa holder can travel to and from Australia for the duration of the visa. The visa holder is allowed to work in Australia for the sponsoring employer and can also study and take part in other activities such as volunteer work.
