The L1 and H1B visas are both nonimmigrant visas that allow foreign workers to work in the United States. However, these visas have several distinct differences.
The L1 visa is an intracompany transfer visa. It is designed for employees of an international company who are being transferred to the United States to work in a related business. The individual must have been employed by the company for at least one year within the three years before the transfer. The visa is valid for up to seven years.
The H1B visa is a specialty occupation visa. It is designed for people with at least a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a specialty occupation. The visa is valid for up to three years and can be extended for an additional three years.
The main difference between the two visas is that the L1 visa is designed for intracompany transfers and the H1B visa is designed for specialty occupations. The L1 visa is valid for up to seven years, whereas the H1B visa is valid for up to three years.
