Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are advanced-practice registered nurses who provide primary care services to patients of all ages. Becoming a Nurse Practitioner requires dedication and hard work, but the rewards of providing quality car

e to patients can make the journey worthwhile. Here is a brief overview of the steps required to become an NP.

1. Obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Most NP programs require applicants to have a BSN degree from an accredited college or university. A BSN program typically takes four years to complete and includes coursework in nursing theory, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, nutrition, and medical-surgical nursing.

2. Obtain a Master of Science in Nursing (

MSN). After completing a BSN program, aspiring NPs must obtain an MSN. These programs typically take two to three years to complete and include coursework in advanced nursing theory, health assessment, diagnostics, and management of acute and chronic illnesses.

3. Become licensed as a registered nurse (RN). All NPs must be licensed as RNs in the state in which they will practice. In order to obtain an RN license, applicants must pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN).

4. Obtain certification as a Nurse Practitioner. Most states require nurse practitioners to obtain cert

ification from a recognized organization, such as the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Certification exams are typically offered through these organizations and require applicants to pass an exam that covers advanced nursing theory, assessment, and diagnosis.

5. Obtain a state license to practice. Once certified, NPs must obtain a state license in order to pr

actice. Licensing requirements vary by state, but typically require applicants to submit a copy of their certification, proof of RN licensure, and proof of continuing education.
