The Canadian government has announced the launch of a new work permit program that will make it easier for foreign workers to enter Canada and work for a Canadian employer. The new work permit program, which will go into effect on August 1, 2023, will provide eligible foreign workers with an open work permit that will allow them to work in Canada for a period of up to two years.
In order to be eligible for the new work permit program, foreign workers must meet certain criteria, including having a valid job offer from a Canadian employer, a valid work permit, and other eligibility criteria. The Global Talent Stream (GTS) is part of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and allows employers to quickly access highly-skilled foreign workers.
The GTS is designed to help employers fill positions in two categories:
1. Category A: This category is for highly-skilled positions such as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and includes occupations such as computer programmers, software engineers, and web developers.
2. Category B: This category is for highly-skilled occupations in a range of industries, including finance and accounting, the creative industries, and the hospitality sector.
The GTS is intended to help employers fill positions quickly and with minimal red tape. Employers can apply for a GTS work permit online and receive a decision within two weeks.
